I stopped at a roadside creek in early April for about an hour to test whether the fish would take larger dry flies.
- Used a hopper dropper setup with a Dragon Tail Hellbender tenkara rod paired with a small mini chubby purple and black beadhead nymph
- The fast water conditions made heavy nymphs ideal for getting down to the fish
- Chose the Hellbender rod specifically to reach across to the opposite side currents without wading
- Fish were aggressively taking the chubby pattern, swallowing the entire fly
- Caught 5 or 6 fish during the session, with most hitting the chubby dry fly
- The success indicated that "chubby season" had officially begun for the year
- Windy conditions initially made casting challenging but didn't prevent productive fishing
